Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing the accounting function, including ensuring the accuracy of corporate financial reports. Specific responsibilities include completing month-end close, ensuring compliance with GAAP and STAT requirements, managing accounts receivable and payable, working to reconcile balance sheet accounts and accounting inaccuracies and imbalances, implementing accounting processes and internal controls, managing relationships with external accountants and auditors, and ensuring tax compliance. Responsible for achieving staff adherence to company vision, values, and policies. Reports to the Controller.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Closes monthly financial records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Reviews financial data and trends for accuracy and reasonableness, investigates data discrepancies.
  • Ensures accounting records are maintained in accordance with GAAP and all statutory requirements.
  • Maintains accounting controls policies established by the company to ensure data accuracy.
  • Coordinates and drives improvements to month-end close process to ensure timeliness and scalability as the company grows.
  • Reviews balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring consistent accounting across all entities in accordance with GAAP and STAT.
  • Prepares journal entries and analysis.
  • Participates in annual audit process, including maintaining schedules and coordinating audit requests with staff.
  • Interprets and prepares various data for entry into ERP system.
  • Assists in building more robust and automated reporting.
  • Works collaboratively with the team and other departments to identify and implement improvements with emphasis on internal control weaknesses and inefficiencies.
  • Works with IT on system implementations and upgrades.

Qualifications and Position Requirements

  • Technical accounting, consolidation, and reporting skills.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and STAT.
  • Experience managing a team.
  • Experience navigating accounting systems.
  • Experience improving processes, implementing controls, and managing change.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly self-motivated, ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to work overtime as required by business demands.
  • Superior Excel skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Experience in an insurance environment is preferred.
  • Systems implementation is a plus.
  • DBA experience is a plus.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Accounting.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Six+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with a blend of public accounting and private company exposure.
